Good Gut Diet Book Reviews

Happy January all-and welcome to the first blog post of 2019. As everyone is so focused on gut health at this time of year, I wanted to share with you my top ten gut health books to treat yourself to!

Whether you're looking to simply learn more about your microbiome, need some tasty recipes or just want to eat a bit healthier-I'd recommend picking these up!

1. The Good Gut Guide by Liz Earle

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you'll know I go on about this quite a bit! It's over a year since I reviewed it in full and I still think it's the best gut guide around. Part recipe book, part introduction to all things gut health-it's simple, readable and not at all preachy and faddy. In fact, typing this has reminded me to get my copy out again!

2.Tummy Revolution 21 by Sara Chadwick

I received this book for review a while ago but still haven't gotten around to doing a full write up on it! Although I am not on the LOW-FODMAP diet myself, this is a fantastic resource for anyone who is-whilst others, like me, will still enjoy the recipes.

Its information on the diet is useful and not at all faddy (thank you for acknowledging the elimination phase isn't forever Sara!); whilst the recipes were much simpler than I expected and gave me some great inspiration. I love the idea of 'Belly Warming Porridge' and 'Potato and Courgette Fritters'. There's also dedicated meal plans, meditation, yoga and a very useful section on moving beyond the elimination diet and creating a personalised plan.

3.The Calm Belly Cookbook

Another low-FODMAP recipe book that was part of my Balanced Belly Book Club a few month's back! This is not really an in-depth low-FODMAP guide but still a solid recipe book; many of the dishes also being lactose and gluten free.

4.Managing IBD by… er well me!

I'd be silly not to give my own book a mention-wouldn't I? In 2017, I published Managing IBD my guide to all aspects of life with Inflammatory Bowel Disease! It covers everything from diet and supplements to medication, support networks and travel!

5. Hassle Free, Gluten Free by Jane Devonshire

Gluten-free isn't synonymous with good gut health but I know many of my readers are (and if you're curious about how gluten-free could potentially help symptoms of things like IBD and IBS; give this post a read).

With royalties going to Coeliac UK (A fantastic charity) , this is a fantastic recipe book by previous Masterchef winner Jane Devonshire. Whilst recipes aren't also dairy-free, they can easily be adapted.

6.The Autoimmune Wellness Handbook by Mickey Trescott

If you have any kind of autoimmune disease, this is well worth a buy. What's it got to do with the gut? Well, lots! The first book covers autoimmune disease and a handy quiz for your risk of developing it (Bit late for me!). It then goes on to look at things like sleep and other aspects of living well with chronic illness.

The second half covers diet; specifically, the gut nourishing Auto Immune Protocol (AIP). There are lots of lovely recipes-like how to make bone broth and a nourishing green breakfast soup. The AIP is tricky but the recipes themselves aren't difficult-although lots do centre around meat. There's then a meal plan and a 12-week lifestyle plan. I can't say I would make every recipe in the book and AIP is not for everyone-but I still love the idea of a handbook for chronic illness and many sections are incredibly useful.

7.The Whole-Body Microbiome: How to Harness Microbes–Inside and Out–For Lifelong Health

I've not had chance to read this one yet as it's literally only just come out today-but it looks like a really interesting read. There's so much fascinating research about our microbiome-and how it's linked to everything from heart disease to mental health and beyond.

8.The Clever Gut Recipe Book

The recipes in this one aren't necessarily for a specific diet but instead all about nourishing your gut. However, they are also all labelled as to whether they are 'gluten-free' and 'dairy free' (most are both)

The beginning of the book also provides a brief overview of things such as prebiotics and probiotics, intermittent fasting and fermenting foods. If you are focusing on weight loss, then there is an option to use these recipes for thosewho are on the 5:2 diet and on an 800 calorie day. I liked how this had plenty of meat and fish recipes (as many health focused books tend to be plant based).

9. The Stress Solution by Rangan Chatterjee

One of the best things any of us can do for our gut health is get a handle on stress (Don't believe me? Read this post on how stress affects the gut)

I loved Dr Rangan's last book and he talks so much sense when it comes to our health. This one was only released a few days ago but it's definitely on my must-read list!
